It’s no secret that I love floral-infused treats, especially when it comes to chocolate. I scoured the internet for any violet chocolate treats I could find, something that is a rarity outside of Europe.

I fell in love with violet flavored things when I was in high school, discovering Choward’s Violet Mints at a British import store. I was hooked on the subtle floral flavor of the violet flower essence. This floral flavor lends itself incredibly well to many varieties of chocolate treats, including chocolate covered fondant creams. Along with rose-flavored creams, fondant creams became very popular in England during the 19th century. The history of these floral flavored chocolates goes back many years in Europe, pre-dating the “after dinner mint” as one of the first boxed chocolates ever made.

Not surprisingly, three of the best violet chocolate creams I’ve ever tasted came from England. During my last trip to the UK I picked up a box of rose & violet creams from two of England’s most venerable luxury department stores, Fortnum & Mason and Harrods.

Fortnum and Mason makes their own brand of chocolate covered rose and violet creams, which includes a variety of both milk and dark chocolates. These rose and violet fondants are handmade, flavored by natural flower essence oils. The taste was a floral explosion in the mouth, with an incredibly creamy texture. I loved the candied rose and violet flowers that topped the candies, which added a beautiful elegance to the chocolates, like opening up a box of flowers. This collection comes in much larger sizes, but I opted for the mini box so it wouldn’t take up too much room in my luggage, amidst all of the other treats I brought home!

Harrods famous food hall carries many different brands of high-end artisan foods, including Rococo Chocolates, a London-based chocolatier that has been making fine handmade chocolates for nearly 40 years on Kings Road in Chelsea. These chocolates contain a floral-infused fondant that’s flavored with organic essential oils, allowing a bouquet of floral flavors to shine through amidst the delectable dark chocolate coating. The candied rose and violet flowers that adorn the chocolates are a nice touch as well, both beautiful and delicious.

Hotel Chocolat was founded in North London in 2004, with the intent of revolutionizing the world of chocolate in England. They make some fantastic dark chocolate covered rose and violet creams that look like a York peppermint patty, but has a very sophisticated flavor profile.

These three chocolate collections are a great way to taste Britain’s fine culinary heritage. I highly recommend them as a wonderful and unique floral treat.
